Oakland Parks Transform Into Pre-Dawn Meditation and Yoga Hubs

Oakland parks open at 6 a.m. this month, drawing dozens of people each weekday to mats and benches for sunrise sessions that start around 5:50 a.m.

The shift comes as local wellness groups report higher demand for outdoor routines after indoor studio memberships rose 12 percent last year. City data from Oakland Parks, Recreation and Youth Development shows trail counters at several sites logged 18,400 visits in June 2025, up from 15,900 the prior June. Warmer evenings and earlier light have pushed more residents to claim space at dawn rather than after work.

Two reliable locations

Lake Merritt draws the largest crowds on the path near the boathouse at Lakeside Drive and Grand Avenue. Practitioners set up on the grass slope facing the water, where the first light hits the surface by 6:05 a.m. A smaller but steady group meets at the south end of Redwood Regional Park along Skyline Boulevard in the Montclair neighborhood. The upper meadow there offers a clear eastern view and fewer people than the lakefront path.

Both sites sit within city limits and require no entry fee. Redwood Regional Park trails connect to the 6-mile Bort Meadow loop, while Lake Merritt offers a flat 3.4-mile perimeter that stays lit by streetlamps until full sunrise.

Park staff recorded 2,300 yoga-related visits across Oakland sites during the first week of July 2025, according to an internal count released this month. Drop-in classes at the Lake Merritt boathouse cost $8 on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of summer. Redwood Regional Park offers no formal instruction but posts a free monthly sunrise schedule on its bulletin board at the Skyline gate.

Practical steps for new participants

Arrive 15 minutes early to claim level ground. Bring a mat rated for dew and a headlamp with a red filter so others are not blinded. Street parking near the Lake Merritt boathouse fills by 5:40 a.m. on weekdays; the Redwood gate lot usually has space until 6:15 a.m. Check the city website the night before for any temporary closures after rain.

Those new to the routine can start at Lake Merritt on a Tuesday for the low-cost class, then move to Redwood once familiar with the timing. City rangers advise leaving valuables in the car trunk and locking bikes at the provided racks near both entrances.
