Oakland City Council Approves Infrastructure Budget; Road Work Begins January 2027

The budget document released by the city finance department identifies the projects as responses to deferred maintenance reports filed in 2024. Those reports documented that 42 percent of Oakland streets were rated in poor or very poor condition. The new allocations tie spending to those same street segments and to 22 bus stops along International Boulevard and Foothill Boulevard.
Timeline for local services
Residents in the Fruitvale and San Antonio districts will see the first resurfacing crews on 23rd Avenue and on portions of 14th Avenue beginning in January 2027. The same schedule calls for new shelters and lighting at six bus stops along International Boulevard by March 2027. City staff stated that construction notices will be mailed to adjacent addresses 30 days before work starts on each block.
Property owners and renters along the affected corridors will receive updated street sweeping schedules and temporary parking restrictions during the work periods. The legislation states that each project phase must be completed within 120 days of the start date listed in the contract.
Next steps after the vote
City procurement staff will issue requests for bids within 60 days of the council action. The budget resolution requires quarterly progress reports to the council beginning in October 2026.
